How to block Instagram on iPhone
Three ways that actually work, and an honest take on which one sticks.
Instagram is not one app. It’s a home feed, plus Stories with a 24-hour clock, plus Reels which is basically a short-video slot machine, plus Explore which is tuned by an algorithm that learns faster than you do. You open it to check one DM and four minutes later you’re watching a stranger’s vlog.
That’s not because you have weak willpower. It’s because there are teams of very smart people whose job is to keep you on that app for thirty more seconds, then thirty more, then your whole evening. We’d lose to it too. Most days we kind of do.
So the question isn’t “why can’t I just stop.” It’s “what system would make stopping the easier choice?” Here are three.
Block Instagram with iOS Screen Time
The fastest way to put Instagram behind a wall, with nothing to install:
- Open Settings > Screen Time. Tap Turn On Screen Timeif it’s not on yet.
- Tap App Limits > Add Limit.
- Choose Social, expand the list, and pick Instagram. Set a daily limit, even 1 minute works.
- Tap Add. The Instagram icon will dim on your Home Screen and the app will block past the limit.
- Optional: under Downtime, schedule the hours you most regret, like the first hour of the morning or after 10pm.
Want to block instagram.com on Safari too? Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites, then add instagram.com to Never Allow.
Honest caveat: when the limit hits, Instagram shows a screen with an Ignore Limitbutton. One tap and you’re back in. If that tap is the part you keep losing to, Screen Time on its own isn’t the system you need. Set a Screen Time passcode that future-you doesn’t know, or move to a blocker that adds real friction.
Use a Focus mode for the times that hurt most
Focus modes don’t block Instagram from opening, but they hide it from your Home Screen and silence its notifications, so the cue to open it disappears.
- Settings > Focus > tap + > choose Work or Custom.
- Under Apps, turn off Instagram (and any other apps) so notifications are silenced.
- Under Home Screen, hide pages that contain Instagram, or build a custom page that doesn’t.
- Schedule it for the hours you choose, or turn it on by hand.
Focus modes pair well with Screen Time: Screen Time stops the app, Focus removes the reminder that the app exists.
How Unglue blocks Instagram (and why it sticks)
The problem with raw blocking is that the block is the whole plan. The app is closed. Now what? Five minutes later you talk yourself into opening it “just to check.”
Unglue flips the order. Instagram stays blocked by default. To open it, you do something real first. Snap a photo of your full water glass. Take a walk and hit a step target. Sit down for a 25-minute focus session. Vision AI checks the photo so the verification is actual work, not a tap.
That tiny act in the middle is the whole point. It’s long enough to remember you wanted to do something else, short enough that you’ll actually do it. And when you do open Instagram, it’s on purpose, not on reflex.
Most Unglue users go from five-plus hours of daily screen time to under one in the first week. Not because we shame you. Because the friction is finally in the right place.
Instagram blocking FAQ
Why is Instagram so hard to put down?
It is three feeds in one. The home feed has your friends, Stories has a 24-hour FOMO clock, Reels is a short-video slot machine, and Explore is tuned by an algorithm that quietly learns what you can't scroll past. Closing one feed usually opens another. That is the design, not a personal failing.
Can I block Instagram without deleting my account?
Yes. iOS Screen Time App Limits, Focus modes, or a third-party blocker like Unglue can all stop the app from opening without touching your account, posts, or DMs. Your account stays exactly as it is; you just remove the autopilot path back into it.
Does iOS Screen Time really block Instagram?
It blocks the Instagram app from opening past the limit screen, and you can extend the block to the Instagram website by adding restrictions under Content & Privacy. The honest caveat: the “Ignore Limit” button is one tap away. If you keep tapping it, Screen Time alone is not the system you need.
Will I still get DMs and notifications when Instagram is blocked?
iOS Screen Time and most blockers stop the app from opening, but Instagram can still deliver push notifications and DMs to the lock screen. If those are the trigger, turn off Instagram notifications under Settings > Notifications > Instagram, or set a Focus mode that hides them during the hours that matter.
How does Unglue block Instagram differently?
Unglue keeps Instagram blocked by default, then asks you to do something real to unlock a small window of time. Drink water, take a walk, finish a 25-minute focus session. The block is not the goal; the small offline action is. The block is just there so the action happens first.
How long should I block Instagram for?
Start with the windows you actually lose: the first hour after waking up, work blocks, and the hour before bed. A full-day block usually does not stick because real life needs DMs eventually. Targeted blocks during the moments you regret are where the win is.
